Is Office 365 for me?

Currently, the classroom and office have Office 2016 installed. The next version from Microsoft is:

  • Office 2019  Standard
  • Office 365 Pro Plus

The two versions are very similar, but Microsoft is only adding new features to the Office 365 Pro Plus.

Since Office 365 Pro Plus enables connected services (One Drive)

There are federal and state laws, as well as College policy, which govern where data can be stored. In general, information that is regulated and highly confidential should be reviewed by

the supervsior, Please review HCC Policy 61.13.01 . Additionally, please review the data classification 

Data Categorization

To prioritize data security activities, HCC conducted a security categorization of its data. Categorization took into account regulatory compliance, legal protections, ethical and privacy concerns, and proprietary value. Data is categorized as 1) Regulated, 2) Confidential, or 3) Public.

Regulated data examples include, but are not limited to, academic performance records, banking information, birth dates, counseling records, financial aid data, medical records, and social security numbers. This data is commonly referred to as personally identifiable information (PII).

Confidential data examples include, but are not limited to, employee evaluations, marketing plans, network information, and intellectual property.

Public data examples include, but are not limited to, board of trustees’ open meeting materials, college reports, course descriptions, directory information, marketing materials, newsletters, and web content. This data is generally accessible or available on request through the Maryland Public Information Act process.


Office 365 Pro Plus and OneDrive

Microsoft's Office 365 Pro Plus and OneDrive is part of Microsoft A5 licenses and is available to all faculty, staff, and credit  students. Office 365 Pro Plus allows up to 1 TB storage per user. OneDrive and Office 365 Pro plus service supports all Windows, MacOS, Android, and Apple Mobile OS, Linux, and has a full feature web interface that can be used on other platforms.
