Microsoft Multifactor Authentication Initial Setup Instructions

You will need two devices to do this setup, a PC/laptop to browse to the web and a phone to scan the code the PC/laptop is showing.

Step 1

Open https://portal.office.com in a web browser and sign in with your HCC email address and password.

Step 2

After you enter in your password it will say "More information required". Click Next.  If you don't get this but instead are asked for a text or phone call, you already have MFA setup!

If you'd rather use the app, sign in via text/phone then follow the Microsoft Multifactor Authentication Setup with Mobile or Office Phone document.

Step 3

In the dropdown it will offer several options.

Step 4

Select Mobile App and the option for Receive notifications for Verification.

If you do not have an Android or Apple smartphone/tablet that you would like to use then follow the Microsoft Multifactor Authentication Setup with Mobile or Office Phone document.

Step 5

Click the blue Set up button.

Step 6

A screen will pop up like the below.

Step 7

On your Android or Apple device open the Play store/Apple Store. Search for Microsoft Authenticator and install it.

Open Microsoft Authenticator

  1. Accept Data Privacy
  2. Click Skip several times until it brings you to  a page that says "Here for work?"

    Click add work account
  3. Allow it to take a picture
  4. Scan the QR code
  5. You will now have a screen with your @howardcc.edu email in it

Step 8

On your laptop or PC click Next. It will check activation status, this should take less than a minute.

 If it fails to check activation and asks you to try again, on your phone click on your @howardcc.edu email account in Microsoft Authenticator.
  1. Click "Remove account"
  2. Then click "Add account"

    Then click "Work or school account"
  3. Rescan the new barcode

Step 9

Once it is setup, it will allow you to click Next on your PC.

Step 10

Your phone will now show a notification asking you to approve or deny, click approve.

If your phone is in Do Not Disturb mode, you may need to disable Do not Disturb mode temporarily or open the Microsoft Authenticator app to see the message. If you took over 60 seconds to respond it will fail and you will need to retry.

Step 11

Your PC will now proceed to the next step. If it doesn't do this automatically, just close the tab/browser your account is fully setup now.

From now onward, when you sign into Office 365 on a device as well as every 30 days you will need to use your phone to authenticate as a second factor.
